Dick And Fanny – Saturday 12th July at Dance Tunnel

DAF July 2014

It’s summer, the sun’s out and DICK AND FANNY is back for our July outing at Dance Tunnel. This time round we welcome a double header of guests from the USA. THE CARRY NATION (NYC) and DR. SLEEP (SF) have been on our wishlist for a while and we’re excited to finally have them play at Dick and Fanny. Support comes from MICHELLE MANETTI who has graced our decks on several previous occasions.

The Carry Nation are New York City’s Nita Aviance and Will Automagic. Will has produced and remixed records as part of Automagic and other monikers for many labels over the last 14 years and has produced and remixed for artists including including N’Dea Davenport, The Ones and The Ananda Project. He has played all over NYC and globally with residencies at Vandam, Ladyfag’s 11:11 and roving art-based warehouse party SPANK. Nita, having made a name for himself performing as a member of the House of Aviance in the 90s, landed behind the decks in the early 2000s with residencies at AREA10009, Mr Black and currently at the award-winning WESTGAY. In his relatively short production history, he has already logged remixes for Beyonce, the Scissor Sisters, Le1f, Automagic, & Adam Joseph.

San Francisco-based Dr. Sleep has been DJing and making music since 2003. She started her career spinning new wave and synth pop and returned to her roots in house and techno in 2009. Since returning to San Francisco in 2010, she has held residencies at Public Works, 222 Hyde, Underground SF and the Deco Lounge and has guested at many of the current underground San Francisco party institutions, such as Honey Soundsystem, As You Like It, Go Bang!, Haceteria, Booty Call, Viennetta Discotheque, Odyssey, Hot Pants, Comfort and Joy, and Bearracuda, to name a few. Dr Sleep has also DJed across the US and abroad, in such places as NYC, LA, Seattle and Shanghai. She currently runs Jacktone Records, broadcasts on Intergalactic FM’s Radio Free Robotron (IF6) every Sunday at 9 am PST, and, has upcoming releases on Tribal, Get Up Recordings, Obsolete Future and her own label.

DJ, Vocalist, producer, purveyor of musical delights and prowess of the night, with over 10 years’ experience under her belt, it’s fair to say Michelle Manetti is a jack of all trades master of many. Her love of old skool sounds crosses from obsession to perversion and back again and can be clearly heard in her music. Michelle Manetti first came to notoriety as vocalist and front woman for Nu Disco-Electronica outfit ‘The Off Key Hat’ whose releases on Andy Blakes vinyl-only label ‘Dissident’ and Yam Who’s ‘ISM’ that teamed them up with remixers such as Ashley Beedle, Daniel Baldelli and Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy elevated the band to cult status. Michelle has also worked as a vocalist, both live and in the studio with the likes of Serge Santiago (Waze & Odyssey) Tom Neville, Fonzarelli, Joey Negro, Pete Gooding and Prok and Fitch.

East London resident JOSH CAFFE has built a cult following with his trademark blend of self-assured bitch house, US house and ghetto tech. With DJ sets every weekend and bi-monthly nights run in different clubs across nightlife hotspot Dalston, it’s little wonder that he’s steadily become such an in-demand DJ.

DAF 14 – February 16, 2013

Dick And Fanny February 2013

DICK AND FANNY, the club night for homosexuals of all persuasions, is back for its first outing of 2013 with a little Valentines special on Saturday 16th February at the Shacklewell Arms. This time round DAF host a roster of home grown DJ talent with HANNAH HOLLAND, THE LOVELY JONJO, DAVID OH and SANDRA LE playing the best of classic house and techno, italo, disco and a bit of 90s dance. DAF is a party for a mixed crowd of dykes, fags, trannies and their admirers with a high dosage of fun, dancing, amazing music and no attitude.

HANNAH HOLLAND is a product of all the best bits of London club culture. She condenses all the most innovative and exciting parties, scenes, movements, subcultures and music into one frenetic curly haired whirlwind of DJ. DJing at a mulletover after-hours session in Shoreditch in 2003, Hannah was spotted by high-octane east-end institution Trailer Trash’s head honcho Mikki Most. She was signed up instantly as a resident. Her star has been on the rise ever since, rocking dancefloors all over the world for hugely respected parties like Bugged Out, The Warehouse Project, Fabric, Ibiza’s Amnesia, Glastonbury, The Arches in Glasgow, Serbia’s notorious Exit Festival as well as Japan and Australia. She is currently working on her debut album set to be released in 2013.

THE LOVELY JONJO needs little introduction having been a stalwart of the London indie club scene for the last few years. Starting as a core part of the small team at legendary London indie club Trash he currently is a resident DJ at Punk Wears Prada in Milan, at the internationally renowned Durrr and boasts his own East London night, Hot Boy Dancing Spot. Jonjo regularly plays nights such as Trailer Trash and Fabric Live, and festivals such as 1234, Glastonbury, Lovebox, V, the Isle of White and Airwaves in Iceland. Jonjo has supported Maximo Park on tour in China and has played Club nights in Athens, Tel Aviv, Barcelona, Berlin, NYC and Tokyo.  Away from the dance floor, he has compiled CDs for Tank magazine and remixed artists like We Have Band and Bishi. Jonjo has created catwalk music for London’s top fashion talents including Gareth Pugh, Jonathan Saunders, and Marios Schwab.

DAVID OH has his fingers in various pies including residencies at Another Night, Songs of Praise and R&She and guest spots at Dirtbox, Beast, Popstarz and Bristol Pride.

DAF co-promoter SANDRA LE has previously DJed at Pooldisco, Modern Art Oxford and for Fringe! Film Fest parties. She has also made international appearances in LA and San Francisco.

DAF 13 – September 29, 2012

DICK AND FANNY return for their 3rd birthday on Saturday 29th September at new venue THE SHACKLEWELL ARMS with an international DJ line up to celebrate three years of mixing up gays, lesbians and their friends. For our birthday we have assembled a trans-European collection of DJs including AFRICA (Mortar & Pestle, Paris), DJUNA BARNES (Copenhagen), RUFUS&BAMBI (London via Italy) and W JEREMY (New York City) to drop DAF’s usual mix of classic house and techno, disco, italo and a hint of electro for a dancing crowd of lesbian, gays, trannies and their admirers. So come celebrate with us.

AFRICA doesn’t entirely know what he is doing. A new project from Graham Peel, one half of the blog house scenes more colourful acts “Dolby Anol,” africa is less a musical statement but more an umberella alias for whatever genre he happens to try that particular week. His first release on Mortar and Pestle (the label he and fellow Dolby Anol-ite John Baillie founded last year) harked back to arguably dance music’s best period, French house. “Girls Gone Mild” garnered support from DJs across the globe and catching the eye of several blogs. It was, however, the unexpected success of his remix of fellow Scottish producer Polymaths “Fragile Breaks” which saw him raising his profile significantly-in a way that only Diplo dropping your song in his BBC radio 1 mix can. He is currently putting the finishing touches to his next release entitled “Paradise 100” to be released on “le label du jour” 100%Silk in 2013.

DJUNA BARNES (Maria Gerhardt) is a Copenhagen-based DJ and writer. For a decade she has been a leading figure in Copenhagen’s nightlife, DJing, booking and hosting parties. She has been involved in the early 00s queer scene Dunst.dk, Distortion Festival, the legendary Suicide Sunday parties and co-started and booked the infamous bar Jolene in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District. Djuna plays a wide range of music and has played all over the world highlights including Tokyo, New York, Berlin and Reykjavik. She has played alongside names such as Grace Jones, Boy George, Peaches and friend and sidekick Anders Trentemøller.

Self-registered free spirit and accidental collector of travel stamps, Elena Colombi – aka RUFUS&Bambi – invaded the London scene some years ago armed with nothing but a love of music and a toothbrush. In that time she’s whisked up something of a storm, scoring a residency at “BREED” and setting up her own shindig “Abattoir”.

Having been a house music aficionado since his teenage years, W JEREMY immediately pursued his dream and went to work in the industry right after school. He got his start as an intern at Elite Music Group where he worked along with some of the industry’s finest, including Issy Sanchez and Debra Eriksen. He then went on to work for the legendary Tony Humphries and help launch the Yellorange label. Six months later, Jeremy took a short break from the industry and moved to the west coast to re-emerge as a DJ. While in San Francisco, he became a resident DJ at the world-famous Endup from 1997-2001 at the Saturday morning party, Otherwhirled. He spent the next several years gigging at clubs all over the Bay Area including, Liquid, Club Six, 111 Minna, 1015 Folsom and 177 Townsend. In 2001 he moved back to New York, and began DJ residencies at clubs such as APT, Centro-Fly, Lot 61, Baktun, and Sapphire Lounge.

DAF 12 – July 14, 2012

It’s summertime and DICK AND FANNY, the club night for homosexuals of all persuasions , is back for its sweltering July outing on Saturday, 14th July at CAMP Basement. Our sizzling midsummer line up includes DAVE KENDRICK (MACHO CITY), NADIA KSAIBA, DJ SVETA (AUSTRALIA) and EL NINO DIABLO. As usual they’ll be supplying the Dick and Fanny crowd of lesbians, gays, trannies and their admirers with a tasty mix of classic house and techno, hi-NRG, disco and a healthy helping of 90s dance hits.

DAVE KENDRICK started his djing career back in 1984 in a room above an Hell’s Angels pub in Lincolnshire. From there he moved on to become a resident at infamous Manchester clubs The Hacienda and Paradise Factory. Dave has played clubs as far afield as Russia but is probably best known for his East London Thursday night party Macho City at the Joiners Arms which just recently finished its four year run. Dave has also played at a variety of London venues and club nights including Dalston Superstore, Vogue Fabrics, Disco Bloodbath, Carpet Burn, Club Butt, Dirtbox and many more.

NADIA KSAIBA is quite extraordinarily difficult. A skill she picked up as a regular at seminal Monday nighter Trash. There she met resident Rory Phillips with whom she started the highly influential Did We Mention Our Disco which ran from 2003-2008 and played host to guests from Prins Thomas to 2Many DJs and Lindstrom to Erol Alkan. Word quickly spread about Nadia’s skills and soon enough she was picking up gigs as tour DJ for the The Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax; and getting booked to bring her unique sound all over the UK and Europe. She has played at some of the most influential and musically credible nightspots including Bugged Out, Fabric, Return To New York, Disco Bloodbath, Bestival, Field Day, Adventures In The Beetroot Field, Trailer Trash and Optimo.

From Russia with love, lust and all points between – prepare for the deliciously diverse dissident DJ from Sydney via Odessa: Ms. Sveta Gilerman a.k.a. DJ SVETA. Sveta began her career as a radio DJ on underground community radio station has since gone on to play clubs all over Australia, Europe, Asia and North America. She has played alongside Kim Ann Foxman, Calvin Harris, Ladyhawke, Junior Vasquez and JD Samson amongst many others and was the opening DJ for Peaches at her Big Day Out shows in 2010. She has programmed and performed for Australian designer Alex Perry’s Sydney Fashion Week shows and has played clubs including London’s DTPM and Torture Garden and parties in NYC from Mr Black to Hiro and The Cock.

EL NINO DIABLO has been playing clubs in London including Trade, Coco Latte, Salvation, Beyond and DTPM. He has also djed anything from London Fashion Week shows to private parties and film and record launches. In his day job he runs a music PR company of the same name where he has been representing STRUT, !K7, Horse Meat Disco, Disco Discharge, Mark Stewart, Brandt Brauer Frick and lots more for a decade.

Jubilee Sunday 3 June 2012

This Jubilee Sunday Dick and Fanny will see its second special event to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. Gagging! DAF hosts this one-off event for its usual crowd of homosexuals of all persuasions at the Dalston Superstore taking over both floors on Jubilee Sunday 3 June 2012.

The impressive line-up includes our special guests the pEt sHOp bEARs (Berlin), SUDHA (Faithless), RUFUS&Bambi (Abattoir), PEP SANCHEZ, and DICK AND FANNY DJs playing house in the basement and a fun mix of house, italo, disco and pop tunes in the upstairs bar for lesbians, gays, trannies and everyone else who fancies it. Queens, get your crown on!

Justin Case & Open Mike, aka the PET SHOP BEARS, throw the very popular party of the same name for the Berlin “hirsute homosexual” dixit Alexis Petridis at Bear’Ghain Cuntine!.

We are so pleased to see SUDHA take to the decks again after a truly amazing set at Dick And Fanny Fringe Party. Sudha has enjoyed global success as the percussionist for Faithless and has worked with a huge variety of artists including Talvin Singh, Kylie and The Spice Girls as well as performing at legendary clubs including Cream and The Hacienda. Since the end of Faithless, Sudha has been hitting the decks and will be DJing internationally over the summer.

And as if her unstoppable DJing flightpath needed any more help, the future promises live sets with a buddy and a series of exclusive afterparties. Y’know, ‘cos her diary isn’t quite packed enough.

Listen to Sudha’s set at the last DAF:

 DAF 11 – Official Fringe 2012 Party – April 14, 2012

DICK AND FANNY, the club night for homosexuals of all persuasions returns for its April slot on Saturday April 14th 2012 to CAMP Basement. This time we have teamed up with our friends from Fringe! Gay Film Fest to host their official party on the festival’s Saturday night. So after you’ve enjoyed a day of films and events you can swing your dancing shoes at DAF to our delectable line up of DJs: LAUREN FLAX (CREEP, NYC), JOSH SPARBER (NYC), BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT (DJ SET) and SUDHA (FAITHLESS). As usual they’ll be supplying you with a tasty mix of classic house and techno, hi-NRG, disco and a healthy helping of 90s dance hits. With live visuals supplied on the night by LUKE WARDA.

£7, £6 b4 10pm, £5 for ticketholders of late night Saturday night Fringe! screenings at Rio Dalston and Hackney Picturehouse

For more info on Fringe! visit their website and get your hands on some tickets.

After her first DAF gig in April 2010 New York resident LAUREN FLAX finally returns to grace our decks again. Lauren has been busy in the last two years from producing her own singles as well as working on her new project CREEP with co-conspirator Lauren Dillard. The pair released their debut single DAYS with Romy XX on vocals and has worked on their debut album to be released later this year. Lauren has also collaborated with a slew of international talent from Fischerspooner to Sia and has remixed bands including Le Tigre, MEN, Telephate and Heartsrevolution.

Fellow New Yorker JOSH SPARBER has been a good friend of ours for years and is finally making his debut at Dick and Fanny. Josh is a boy about town in his native New York where he runs weekly party Good Times at Eastern Bloc in the East Village and DJs the city’s nightspots from Chelsea to Brooklyn including Vandam, Santo’s Party House and Mr Black as well as national and international guest slots from San Francisco to Philadelphia and London to Stockholm.

Another friend and local favourite BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT (aka Rod Thomas) also returns for another set at Dick and Fanny after his first stunt with us at last year’s Pool Disco at Shoreditch House. Rod is a singer, writer, producer and DJ that NME have called ‘the boy Robyn in all but name’. His 2010 debut single Love Part II was one of our favourite electropop moments of the day and his debut album is set to be released in June this year. In his DJ sets Rod plays homage to his obsession with 90s dance music that may or may not include a bit of Ace of Base, a passion he regularly indulges at his club night Another Night.

Also onboard again are Scena Mancante who will be providing some eye candy with their live visuals all night. DAF is a party for a mixed crowd of dykes, fags, trannies and their admirers with a high dosage of fun, dancing, amazing music and no attitude.

Both veteran DJs on the scene, MANDY GRAVES & JOOLS PALMER met back in 2009 and hit it off instantly.  Since then, they’ve been curating and DJing at NYC party Bassment where they welcomed guest such as Kim Ann Foxman, Lady Miss Kier, Sammy Jo (Scissor Sister’s official DJ) and Johnny Dynell, establishing Bassment as the weekly go-to for DJs and house music lovers alike. The DJ duo are quickly becoming prominent members of NYC nightlife, having played at such notable parties and clubs as Josh Sparber’s Good Times, Rich King’s Snaxx, several SPANK parties and Xanadude as well as reaching beyond NYC with a national and European tour in the works.

SANJAY has been a fleeting fixture on scenes, from Medway to Calcutta, for nearly a decade – holding residencies at Rebel Rebel and most recently, Dalston Superstore. Described as “the Indian Kenneth Williams”, this popinjay can usually be found rummaging for disco reclaim and house rarities.

It is an excellent night. The music is ACE. I wish the venue was bigger as the queue is sometimes fatal to get in. But I always come and love it.
